Congress is on the verge of passing one of the most massive tax overhauls in U.S. history. This proposed plan will take food off the table for those at risk of hunger in Eastern Massachusetts.

There’s still time to oppose the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.

The U.S. House and U.S. Senate will begin working in a Conference Committee to reconcile the differences between the two versions of the plan with the goal to pass a final bill by the New Year.

1. Call Massachusetts Congressman Richard Neal (D – Springfield) at (202) 225-5601, who has been one of the fourteen House members assigned to the Conference Committee. You can use the following message:
   
   “Please stand against the tax bill as it is currently proposed and oppose a conference committee agreement. This tax overhaul could directly impact people at risk of hunger in our country. The proposed tax plan would add an estimated $1.5 trillion to deficits over the next ten years, which would result in reducing or eliminating programs, like Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), that directly benefit many low- and middle-income individuals and underserved communities.
   
   The proposed changes in the tax plan could also discourage charitable giving, resulting in fewer financial donations to The Greater Boston Food Bank and other nonprofit organizations and making it more difficult for those in need to receive critical services.”
