As the largest hunger-relief organization in New England, GBFB distributes quality, nutritious food to 190 communities across Eastern Massachusetts. We power a vast distribution network that provides 87 million healthy meals each year through our partner hunger-relief agencies, direct distributions, and through our SNAP assistance work. Each month we help feed 600,000 people as far north as the New Hampshire border to the Cape and islands, and as far west as the Worcester County border.
Hunger is not an emergency – it’s the lived reality of one in three people in Eastern Massachusetts. It is a big problem that requires a big solution. This is why our work goes beyond helping to put food on the table. We take a bold, innovative, and multi-pronged approach to achieve our mission of Ending Hunger Here
GBFB is proud to distribute fresh, free food to over 600 partner agencies and direct distribution sites across Eastern Massachusetts, including food pantries, soup kitchens, meal programs, senior centers, and more. We also distribute food directly to those in need through direct service programs, like our free Mobile Markets and the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP).
GBFB invests in our network of hunger-relief agency partners through our Community Investment Grant Program that funds mission critical projects that support increasing their local capacity to serve more clients and to provide more healthy food to their community.
Our Nutrition team, comprised of two Registered Dietitians Nutritionists, oversees the nutritional value of all the food we distribute, ensuring that over 95% of the food we distribute meets the highest nutritional standards. We provide nutritional education, assist neighbors in accessing SNAP benefits, and share resources through our recipe website Click ‘N Cook. If you or someone you know is in need of food, you can use our partner agency locator on our Need Food webpage to find a hunger-relief partner near you.
We have a vision to lead our community in pursuing bold, yet thoughtful anti-hunger policy solutions and we are focused on advancing policy that accelerates current food access programs that help alleviate the hunger crisis, while also supporting sustainable polices that address the root-causes of food insecurity. The Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB) conducts research and analyzes data on on the prevalence of hunger in our region, our operations, and our network of hunger-relief partners, and community to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of how we feed Eastern Massachusetts. Our annual statewide research, an effort in partnership with Mass General Brigham’s research team, examines the prevalence of food insecurity and the barriers to accessing food assistance, which enables GBFB to make data-driven and community-based investments to expand capacity across our network and get us closer to ending hunger here.
Every dollar donated to GBFB helps provide 2 meals. With your support, we have the power to end hunger here.
