For many, the month of September represents change. Students head back to school. The leaves begin to change color, and the days become shorter as the seasons change from summer to fall. And at The Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB), this September we worked to influence change by raising awareness around hunger in the United States and inspiring people to take action through Hunger Action Month™—the Feeding America network’s annual nationwide campaign. Hunger Action Month is a time for advocates, supporters, and community leaders across Eastern Massachusetts and the United States to unite in support of ending hunger in our communities.
This Hunger Action Month, GBFB was busy as we continued our work to end hunger here. From hosting Taste of the Food Bank to wearing orange to celebrating Hunger Action Day®, GBFB was able to mobilize our community to take action and help end hunger for the one in three people in Massachusetts who face food insecurity. Here’s a recap of what we have been up to this Hunger Action Month:
Governor Healey and Mayor Wu both issued formal proclamations to declare September as Hunger Action Month.
On September 10, Hunger Action Day, GBFB and community partners wore orange, the official color of hunger, to raise awareness about food insecurity and how to support our mission to end hunger here.
Treasurer Goldberg and her team volunteered at GBFB during Hunger Action Month to pack boxes that will serve 8,700 meals
Sr. Public Policy Manager Kate Adams spoke with Representative Jake Auchincloss on passing a strong and equitable Farm bill at the New England Council’s Capitol Hill Report
GBFB welcomed twenty-five local chefs and over 350 attendees into our Yawkey Distribution Center on September 19 for our Taste of The Food Bank event.
GBFB’s 6th annual WCVB Day of Giving telethon featured stories of hope from across Eastern Massachusetts.
