Happy Birthday, SNAP!

Published on September 28, 2017

On Friday, Sept. 29, we are celebrating a milestone 40th anniversary. On September 29, 1977, President Carter signed the 1977 Food Stamp Act into law. This bi-partisan legislation established the modern food stamp program, now referred to as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), that expanded the reach of food assistance to our most vulnerable citizens and made it more effective and efficient.

On Monday, U.S. Congressman Jim McGovern delivered an “End Hunger Now” speech highlighting the 40th anniversary of the Food Stamp Act of 1977.

On Tuesday, hunger advocates, State Senators Jamie Eldridge and Sal DiDomenico, and State Representatives Steven Kulik and Natalie Higgins gathered on the Massachusetts State House steps to cut a cake and celebrate the last 40 years of success.
