“Everybody’s got a Hungry Heart”

Published on February 5, 2016

Last night, everyone at the Bruce Springsteen concert sure did have a heart for the hungry. There was a packed house as The Boss rocked the Garden, and at the end of the night he urged the crowd to donate to The Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB) and The Food Project on their way out. As our volunteers stood by the exits, they were flooded with a wave of generosity from excited fans. Volunteers were overwhelmed as $20, $50 and $100 dollar bills were flying into their buckets. We’ve been counting all morning and the final total raised was $17,463! That is enough to provide 52,389 healthy meals to those in need in Eastern Massachusetts!

GBFB even ran into a few friends at the concert. Our generous supporter and founder of our annual “Food is Medicine” event, Dr. Allan Hamdan, was at the show. It was his 76th Bruce Springsteen concert and he shared that it was “The Boss” who really inspired him to get involved in hunger-relief: “My interest in hunger relief was sparked 25 years ago at my first Bruce Springsteen concert.  At each one, Bruce spoke about the millions of American children, working families, students, elderly and veterans who did not know if and when their next meal was coming.  And with the same passion that he brings to his performances, Springsteen encouraged his audience to contribute their time and money to the local food bank. And when the Boss speaks, his fans listen.”
