Just one week before final exams, on May 2, roughly 280 low-income students at Bunker Hill Community College each received close to 40 lbs. of nutritious food at The Greater Boston Food Bank Mobile Market. Carrots, eggs, apples, hummus, tofu, onions, potatoes, sweet potatoes, as well as frozen poultry, pork and beef were offered to students. GBFB and Bunker Hill Community College have worked together in the past to serve veterans, but this is time they’ve partnered together to serve low income students. The Mobile Market was made possible through the joint efforts of GBFB and the college’s Single Stop Program. Single Stop USA is a non-profit initiative that provides resources to help low-income students remain in school. These resources include benefits screening, tax preparation, financial counseling and legal assistance. “While our students are struggling to improve their lives by getting an education, they face a tremendous amount of challenges due to the economic climate. Our EAT SMART-BE SMART theme is getting the message to students that they need to eat healthy in order to succeed, ” said Dr. Kathleen O’Neill, Single Stop Program Director at Bunker Hill Community College. She continued, “Our partnership with GBFB will absolutely aid us in providing essential resources to our students. This was evident in the attendance and appreciation of all who joined in the festive event on Wednesday.” Single Stop and GBFB are in the process of planning future Mobile Market dates.
