Meg Staknis doesn’t “believe that anyone in the United States – or anyone, anywhere, really, but especially in the United States – should have to go hungry.” She’s transformed her strong belief into a powerful and generous hands-on response to hunger in Eastern Massachusetts. Meg started out a few years ago with regular payroll deductions in support of The Greater Boston Food Bank through her employer. Since then, she has become more and involved and hands-on, volunteering at food sorting events and at the Kids Cafe at the Yawkey Boys & Girls Club in Roxbury. Eventually, Meg increased her financial contributions and became a member of the Harvesters Circle. She is also currently serving as Co-Chair of GBFB’s Kitchen Cabinet, a group of area professionals who are dedicated to raising awareness and funding to end hunger through a series of signature events and special volunteer opportunities. Meg has continued to expand and diversify her contributions in support of GBFB. In July 2010, she and her husband, David, and young son, James, collected nearly 500 pounds of food through a drive they organized in their hometown of Bedford. “It was easy to do and more successful than I could have hoped for,” said Meg, who gives credit to her “incredibly generous neighbors.” They kicked off their second (now) “Annual Staknis Family Food Drive in late August. “ “I deeply believe in GBFB’s mission, and I am thankful to be in a position where I can contribute to it,” says Meg. The Greater Boston Food Bank is sustained in its mission to end hunger through the generous financial and volunteer contributions of neighbors like Meg, David and James. We thank and salute them for their commitment to ending hunger in our community. Please click here to learn more about various Harvesters Circle levels of giving.
