This year, we are proud to report we reached 95.7 percent of that goal—the equivalent of 50 million healthy meals. We could not have achieved it without you, our member agencies, our healthcare partners and our network of public and private collaborators. This alliance against hunger works to ensure that our neighbors in need have enough nutritious food to eat at least one healthy meal a day. The harmful effects of hunger and food insecurity on health are well documented. This, combined with the fact that most of those we serve rely on us regularly, informed our decision to establish The Greater Boston Food Bank’s (GBFB) first-ever Nutrition Policy (see page 3). We set aggressive, yet attainable policy goals, including increasing our produce volume to 40 percent of our total distribution and protein and dairy to 35 percent by 2020. In 2017, fresh fruits and vegetables made up 32 percent of the 61 million pounds of food that passed through our warehouse. And thanks to the Massachusetts Emergency Food Assistance Program, we were able to provide other basics of a balanced diet, including milk, eggs and chicken. We also continued to expand our healthcare partnerships. We are now working with nine centers across Eastern Massachusetts. Six of our healthcare partners offer one of GBFB’s Mobile Markets, farmers-market-style, free distributions of produce at their facilities. Despite our efforts, hunger persists, particularly among children. In Massachusetts, 1 in 7 children is food insecure. For this reason, we formed the Rise and Shine Coalition of Massachusetts and have taken the lead in supporting legislation that will enable more food-insecure children to participate in the free and reduced-price School Breakfast Program. Taking on hunger requires the collaboration, commitment and contributions of dedicated supporters like you. We thank you for standing with us and for your generous support. Together, we can end hunger here.
