In 2016, GBFB hired a physician special- izing in public health to lead its efforts to work with the medical community to help patients struggling with hunger. As the first physician on staff at a U.S. food bank, Kathryn Brodowski, MD, MPH, serves as GBFB’s Director of Public Health and Research. She brings to the position exper- tise on the high prevalence of chronic diseases like obesity, hypertension and diabetes among food insecure adults, as well as the increased risk of asthma and iron-deficiency anemia among children living in food insecure households. In collaboration with GBFB’s new Food Security Task Force, made up of medical and public health experts among others, Dr. Brodowski launched GBFB’s public health initiative designed to support health centers in communities with high levels of food insecurity, as identified by GBFB’s geo-mapping technology. The public health initiative takes a three-pronged approach. First, GBFB offers to help cen- ters implement the Hunger Vital Sign™ screening tool, consisting of two simple questions that identify food insecure patients. Second, GBFB provides a toolkit connecting patients with local food pantries, state and federal food assistance programs, and nutrition resources like GBFB’s clickNcook.org website. And third, GBFB sets up a free, on-site Mobile Market distributing fresh produce monthly. GBFB began piloting the program this year with two partners, the Charles River Community Health Center in Brighton and the Greater Lawrence Family Health Center. In Lawrence, prelim- inary results indicate that 63% of patients seen at the health center are food insecure, meaning they do not know where their next meal will come from. In its first two months, GBFB’s Mobile Market in Lawrence served nearly 370 households, poten- tially reaching about 1,200 adults, and its Mobile Market in Brighton is serving an average of 100 households monthly, helping about 350 people each time. During 2017, GBFB will continue to build partnerships with community health centers across Eastern Massachusetts in its mission to end hunger here.
