47 Hunger-Relief Organizations Receive $243,000 in Grants from The Greater Boston Food Bank

Boston, MA (July 31, 2019) – The Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB), the largest hunger-relief organization in New England, distributed $243,060 in capacity-building grants to 47 hunger-relief organizations in nearly 40 communities across Eastern Massachusetts. These annual grants were provided to support investments that enable GBFB partner-agencies to distribute more food and reach more people in need.

As a result of GBFB’s Hunger-Free by 2028 campaign investment, GBFB nearly doubled this year’s total grant award compared to last year. It was the most competitive application year to date. GBFB received more than 80 applications with requests for assistance totaling nearly $720,000.

This matching-grant program funds up to 50 percent of an approved application, with the balance paid by the GBFB-partner agency. Applications were submitted for a range of capacity expansion projects, including walk-in freezers or coolers, refrigerated trucks, shelving, cooler bags, and power jacks. The purpose of this investment is to build and strengthen the capacity of the network of partner organizations to more efficiently and effectively get food to people in need.

“For the last several years GBFB has committed more than $1 million dollars in our annual capacity-building grant program, investing in infrastructure projects that can really change an organization’s ability to serve their communities,” explained Catherine D’Amato, president and CEO, GBFB. “These funds have made significant advancements in our network’s ability to achieve our mission to end hunger here. This year we have redoubled our investment to accelerate our vision to create a Hunger-Free Eastern Massachusetts.”
