Massachusetts Emergency Food Assistance Program (MEFAP)

Massachusetts Emergency Food Assistance Program

MEFAP breakfastA meal gap of more than 135 million meals exists in Massachusetts. This is the number of additional meals required for everyone in need across the state to have three meals a day. Additional MEFAP funds can close a significant part of that gap with locally grown, nutritious food. This year we are advocating for an increase in funding for MEFAP to $20 million in the FY18 budget.

MEFAP is a critical piece of the Commonwealth’s budget that allows GBFB to purchase quality, nutrient-rich foods and locally grown fresh produce that is distributed year-round to those in need through the Food Bank Coalition of Massachusetts (four MA food banks) and their network of 845 food pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters. Each year, GBFB advocates for this funding in the state budget.

MEFAP feeds over 800,000 Massachusetts residents while supporting local farmers and vendors who produce and sell eggs, dairy products, fresh fruits and vegetables along with shelf stable commodities. 100% of MEFAP funding goes directly to feeding hungry people.

mealgapThe issue of hunger is not going away, making these funds more crucial than ever. A $20 million allocation will provide a total of 23,080,661 meals to those in need.
