Thanks for Giving

Published on November 1, 2011

Thanksgiving represents a time of giving. The Greater Boston Food Bank is grateful for the support it receives from the entire community to help ensure that struggling families in Eastern Massachusetts have a healthy, hunger-free holiday. Each year we kick off the holiday season with our Chain of Giving event. It’s a wonderful celebration of generosity and teamwork, that brings together more than 150 of our most supportive donors, partners, and friends to help us unload the first truckload of frozen turkeys for families in need donated through our popular annual Turkey Drive. These turkeys come from a variety of sources, including corporate food donors, who give generously year after year. Despite the fact that turkey prices increased by almost 20%, Stop & Shop again donated 7,000 turkeys, while Shaw’s multiplied its gift six-fold! Other generous turkey donors include: Agar, BJ’s, C&S Wholesale Grocers, Hannaford Supermarkets, Highland Street Foundation, Roche Bros., Turkeys4America and Whole Foods. In addition, individuals and corporations participate in the Turkey Drive by raising money that will help us reach our goal of 40,000 turkeys this year. For just $16, individual donors can give a 12-14lb turkey. And families, friends and co-workers can also form turkey teams to reach out to their networks for additional donations, making an even bigger difference in ending hunger here. GBFB works throughout the year to respond to the growing problem of hunger in our community. We could not succeed without our generous food and financial donors. Thank you for your support.
